Educational Services

We offer a variety of 1:1 educational therapy services for students of all ages and learning profiles. Our strengths-based approach empowers students to understand their learning profiles and leads to positive changes in their self-esteem, motivation, effort, and academic performance.

Consultations

The educational therapy process begins with a comprehensive parent case review/consultation to discuss concerns and goals, review records, provide recommendations for identified challenges, and determine next steps.

Our educational consultations focus on each student’s strengths and challenges in:

  • Reading, writing, spelling, and math
  • Attention
  • Executive Function
  • Language and memory
  • Social-emotional learning
I am so grateful for your insights and perception regarding my son. The consultation provided will literally change the course of the services he receives. I am certain that this will, in turn, improve his learning and self-esteem for the rest of his life. Parent of School-Aged Child

Depending on the needs of the learner, we may recommend educational therapy, executive function coaching, dyslexia screening, academic remediation or specialized instruction, and/or a referral for further evaluation.

Our personalized, holistic approach focuses on understanding and describing each student’s learning profile in the context of school and home, or the work setting for adults. In addition, our consultations address appropriate school placements.

Educational Therapy & Tutoring

Educational therapy (ET) is one-on-one strategy instruction customized to meet each student’s unique learning needs. ET is grounded in the unique therapeutic relationship that develops between each student and the educational therapist. While assessments are not required for accessing our services, our educational therapists are trained to interpret neuropsychological and/or educational evaluations in order to provide appropriate instruction.

What to Expect from Educational Therapy

Generally, students meet with their educational therapists once or twice weekly during the school year. After 6-8 sessions, a parent conference is held to review progress, make sure the “match” is working, and address goals. When appropriate, our educational therapists will communicate with teachers, collaborate with the special education team, attend school meetings, and share information about the student’s progress, upcoming assignments, and strategies.

Educational therapy is designed to help students:

  • Develop a more realistic understanding of who they are as learners.
  • Adopt a strategic approach to managing academic other responsibilities.
  • Increase motivation to engage with their work and persist when challenged.
  • Develop and apply strategies that address areas of challenge in a supportive environment.
  • Reduce the stress and anxiety associated with school.

Executive Function Coaching

The purpose of EF coaching is to help the learner develop a set of strategies for goal setting, planning, prioritizing, organizing, flexible problem solving, memorizing, self-monitoring and self-checking. Mastering these skills leads to increased motivation, self-confidence, and self-esteem.

Using ResearchILD’s SMARTS Executive Function curriculum, students learn how to:

  • Recognize and reflect on their unique set of learning strengths and challenges.
  • Overcome procrastination and avoid distractions to improve time management.
  • Plan, prioritize, and break down long term projects or tasks into manageable parts (e.g., school projects or a job search).
  • Organize and maintain their backpack, notebooks, assignments, and other materials.
  • Develop effective and efficient studying and note-taking strategies.
  • Create personalized and systematic systems for essays, projects, and long-term assignments.
  • Set clear and appropriately challenging goals in and out of school.

Remediation & Specialized Instruction

Reading

Our reading specialists are trained and certified in a variety of specialized research-based reading programs, including Orton-Gillingham, Wilson Reading, Read Naturally. Drawing on a variety of programs, our reading specialists design a framework that will best fit the needs and interests of each student.

We offer dyslexia screening to students in Pre-K through grade 3. The screening provides specific information regarding the markers for dyslexia. Following a brief assessment, individual feedback and recommendations are provided to parents.

Writing

Our written language interventions range from working at the sentence level through the essay and research level. To match each individual’s learning style, our Educational Specialists incorporate many uniquely designed graphic organizers, structured writing approaches, and the use of technology. We find the methods that are suitable for each individual’s learning style.

Math

We employ a variety of methods and materials to support the needs of our students who struggle with math. We use direct instruction along with methods that integrate multiple representations, e.g., concrete materials, representations (diagrams and pictures), and abstract concepts. We augment our work with a variety of games and web-based software, including virtual manipulatives, and video instruction. We provide opportunities in a one-to-one environment for students to engage in discussions about math reasoning and problem solving and to discover the methods that work best for them.
