Book Gifts for the Teachers in Your Life

While looking for presents for the teachers in my life, I found this great list of book recommendations about teaching and learning on Medium.com. I figured many of you might also be looking for gifts for teachers. Or maybe you are a teacher and could use some new reading material. Below are some of my favorite suggestions.

Make It Stick: The Science of Successful Learning
by Peter C. Brown, Henry L. Roediger III, and Mark A. McDaniel
Drawing on recent discoveries in cognitive psychology and other disciplines, the authors offer concrete techniques for becoming more productive learners.

Understanding How We Learn: A Visual Guide
by Yana Weinstein and Megan Sumerack
This accessible guide helps teachers to integrate effective, research-backed strategies for learning into their classroom practice. The book explores exactly what constitutes good evidence for effective learning and teaching strategies, how to make evidence-based judgments instead of relying on intuition, and how to apply findings from cognitive psychology directly to the classroom.

Small Teaching: Everyday Lessons from the Science of Learning
by James M. Lang
In Small Teaching, James Lang presents a strategy for improving student learning with a series of modest but powerful changes that make a big difference―many of which can be put into practice in a single class period.

Powerful Teaching: Unleash the Science of Learning
by Pooja K. Agarwal, Ph.D., and Patrice M. Bain, Ed.S.
Unleash powerful teaching and the science of learning in your classroom. This practical resource is filled with evidence-based strategies that are easily implemented in less than a minute—without additional prepping, grading, or funding!

Of course, no list of great books for teachers would be complete without at least one from SMARTS Director Lynn Meltzer.

Promoting Executive Function in the Classroom
by Lynn Meltzer, Ph.D.
Accessible and practical, this book helps teachers incorporate executive function processes—such as planning, organizing, prioritizing, and self-checking—into the classroom curriculum.

Let us know in the comments about other books that would make great gifts for teachers.

Happy Holidays!
