This is the first post in a series that highlights the speakers of this year’s 36th Annual Executive Function Conference, which will focus on promoting resilience and equity for ALL students.
This November, we are honored to feature Irvin Scott, Ed.D, senior lecturer on education at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, who will offer a session on “Equity Detectives: The Heart of the Matter for Teachers and Schools.”
For 30 years, Dr. Scott has touched the lives of students and teachers through his many roles, which range from English teacher and choral director to principal, assistant superintendent, and chief academic officer. Before beginning his role at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, Dr. Scott served as the deputy director for K-12 education at the Gates Foundation.
Equity Detectives
Educators, parents, and administrators everywhere are currently considering what education will look like after the COVID-19 pandemic. Following a difficult year that has left no person in our global community untouched, many are eagerly calling for a “return to normal.” In an article for the Harvard Advanced Leadership Initiative, Dr. Scott challenges the idea of returning to “normal” and calls for educators to re-envision the impact they can have.
At ResearchILD’s 36th Annual Executive Function Conference, Dr. Scott will discuss the concept of “equity detectives.” Equity detectives can help actively identify inequities in schools and engage in conversations about race and identity. Equity detectives can support their communities as they move beyond conversations towards actionable steps for systemic change.
